We will look at five such instances, where the Indian legends failed to grasp the exact magnitude of his team’s or his partner’s need and went on to commit sinful acts which went down as black incidents of selfishness.
- MS Dhoni versus England; 2018
It was the 2nd ODI of the series and India was pitted against England in what was a must-win game for the hosts. After some imperious batting, England managed to put a mammoth total of 322 on the cards.
With a mountain to climb, India was already wobbling from the start. Despite an anchoring knock from Virat Kohli, the rest of the middle order was skittled out without much resistance.
Dhoni did get a start and was holding on to the innings for too long. With his team needing a run rate of almost 15 per over, he kept on defending in the front foot.
It was extremely difficult to understand that what exactly was Dhoni clinging on to, however, all he could manage was 37 runs from 59 deliveries before finally holing out to Ben Stokes.
Dhoni has been India’s one of the finest hitters and captains, however, this innings from him drew severe flak, making him culpable for allowing England to make a comeback in the series.
- Dinesh Kartik versus Sri Lanka; 2009
In the 3rd ODI of Sri Lanka’s tour of India, after batting first, the Lions could only manage 239 after being sundered by Ravindra Jadeja’s impeccable bowling with the left-arm spinner plundering 4 wickets.
India cantered to a convincing victory as the Sri Lankan bowlers surrendered meekly. With almost 8 overs to go and India tied with Sri Lanka’s score of 239, Dinesh Kartik was at the striker’s end after Tendulkar stole a single to square things up.
Sachin Tendulkar was batting on 96 at the moment and the entire nation probably wanted his century more than the team’s victory at that point in time.
However, Dinesh Kartik who single-handedly changed the course of the Nidahas Trophy final with a blitzkrieg towards the end of the game played the villain in this case.
Kartik was facing Lasith Malinga and all India needed was a single to win and Sachin was a strike away from another glorious century in his career. Surprising everyone, young Kartik smashed the winning strike for India as he hammered Malinga for a boundary in the very next delivery.
It is still difficult to stay that whether there is any more bad blood between the little master and Kartik, but fans were extremely disappointed with this young wicket-keeper for spoiling their double celebrations.
